The GSM-R simulator can be found at www.signallers.co.uk/gsmr
I would recommend a minimum screen size of 15" (but preferably larger) and ideally a touchscreen device for optimum use. If using a 15" monitor you will be required
to enter full screen mode (F11). If the trainer would like to use the Trainer Controls discretely, I would suggest a dual screen setup or a bluetooth mouse.
However, many options are available - so be creative!
As of 8th August 2021, the website has been tested on the latest versions of Firefox (90.0.2), Chrome (92.0.4515.131) and Microsoft Edge (92.0.902.67).
If you have two laptops and wish to use one for the GSM-R and the other for the trainer controls:
- Go to http://www.signallers.co.uk/gsmr/extend.html
- The trainer controls are located off the screen. If you follow the instructions provided by Tech Advisor here, the second laptop can be set up as a second screen. Make sure you set the second screen as a collaboration point so you can control the trainer controls from the second laptop.
The default headcode / signal numbers are 1A01 and HJ311 respectively. In the bottom right (under the trainer controls) you may change the default options
by typing in the desired outputs and pressing on "Change". This will change all options within the GSM-R. The system will automatically make the characters
uppercase, so you can type in any format. A four character limit has been added for the headcode and a six character limit applied for the signal number.
The webpage has been created to allow one action to run at any one time. Therefore, the first action must be completed in full before the next action can begin.
Should the user take a wrong step and the Trainer Controls remain "dead", the webpage can be refreshed by pressing F5.
When the trainer initiates an Emergency Call via the Trainer Controls, a call can be answered in two ways. This can be by manually answering in the bottom right of the GSM-R
or automatically after eight seconds. Please note that an emergency call cannot be answered, resolved and finished within eight seconds or the call will be answered twice.
This should not be an issue as all emeregency calls should take more than eight seconds to resolve, but should this occur press F5 to refresh.
The Call Forward merges between multiple screens and different functions. Therefore, the button sequence must be completed correctly and in the correct order.
The steps to take are:
- Trainer to press Call from Driver from the Trainer Controls
- User to answer the call in the bottom right of the GSM-R
- Press the Forward button at the bottom of the GSM-R. This will then flash green
- Press the More button at the bottom-left of the GSM-R.
- Press the PhoneBk button at the bottom of the GSM-R. This will take the user to the Phone Book screen.
- The default option is Gatestown and cannot be changed. Press the Telephone Icon on the right side of the GSM-R.
- The user will be taken back to the Incoming screen. Press the Forward button at the bottom of the GSM-R. This will end the process.
No. The website has been built to be a replicate of a GSM-R system (which cannot fit on a phone). However, if you zoom out on your phone the system still works.
Please note, if any issues are found from a mobile device (or any device where you are required to zoom out for the GSM-R to fit), these are not supported.
The website has been created for trainers to use for training purposes only. This tool is a simulation only and is not an exact replica.
The website must not be used in a live environment where any audio sounds can distract other signallers.
